Reading these poems - especially the longer poems - one can easily see why Ferlinghetti was attracted to these poems - there is a significant overlap of poetic sensibilities with those of the beatniks. The opposition of Prevert to war and religion is highly visible but generally not strident. Prevert's use of repetition, the ordinariness of his observations create a very accessible poetry.
As an example "Flowers and Wreathes" explores thought in the image of flower, the pull of beauty and pleasure over reality etc. The poem ends with the following use of repetition "Because / In their head / Sprouts the sacred flower / The thin little filthy flower / The sick flower / The bitter flower ..."
Poetry? Well you're the one for the words. You have a gift not only with words, but a beautiful singing voice to go along with it. And, we both married musicians at a young age. Quite a coincidence, if you believe in such a thing. That's poetry in itself, if you want to put a fine point on it. Who would have guessed?

More on poetry, I haven't even read the verses of Shakespeare, with the exception of Romeo and Juliet in French, when I was sixteen. Let me tell you it went flat. The funniest story I ever heard of Shakespeare at School was from this wonderful friend of mine years ago. He was an American brought up in England and went up to Oxford for a stint. There was a reading of Julius Caesar in his class, and when the professor asked one of his students the meaning of 'Et tu, Brute', the hapless young man hesitated for a moment before shouting "And you, you big brute of a guy!". Naturally I can't tell it the way my friend did, but it sent me into peals of laughter, and it was all in the delivery of my friend, who was a great one for imitating people's voices.

Well, since you asked, it's always been for the French poet Jacques Prévert here. He was an author, a poet and a film director, responsible for 'The Children of Paradise', considered by many one of the greatest movies ever made. Prévert was a man of the People, and he never threw an air in his life. He poked fun at all pretensions; be it politics or platitudes, and was considered irreverent in his time but that never deterred him. Perhaps his most famous poem; a powerful one, was the one he wrote on war called 'Barbara', and I believe it says it all.

I'm sending you here another favorite of his in rough translation for you to read when you wake up this morning and have enjoyed your coffee. If you want to read more of his poems to brush up on your French, I will send you a copy of his 'Paroles' or Words, published in 1946. Prévert was an extraordinary man to my mind, and he is still much read and very popular in France.

Here is his 'Déjeuner du Matin' , and if you've ever found yourself in such a situation at breakfast or otherwise, you may understand what this great poet has to say

He added some milk
to his cup of coffee
He put sugar
In his cup
With a small spoon
He stirred it

And he set down the cup
Without speaking to me

He made rings
With the smoke

I studied this book of Jacques Prevert poems in high school and just wanted a copy since the one I had from 40 years ago has long since been lost. It was my favorite part of French class .
