Lightning Rider NA Fantasy/Time Travel Tesla Time Travelers Book 1 eBook Jen Greyson

I admit I didn't want to read this because the whole lightning thing and the time travel thing didn't appeal to me at all. When you can read demons, wolves and vamps often authors try and come up with a different spin and it all gets a little too weird or fails in the execution. Not the case here, this is the best non mainstream kindle urban fantasy that I have read in a few months. The characters are great and very relatable, Evy reminds me a lot of Mercy Thompson. The love interest is hot but not distracting from the overall plot (its definitely UF rather than romance) and the book is well written and very readable.

Why I don't rate it higher than a 4 - I personally got a little bogged down in the middle in the 'technical' explanation of lightning riding and associated 'alterations'. This could be either because this kind of detail isn't my thing or it could be because it made the middle of the book run slow. Having said all that, this writer has strong potential and if you are a veteran UF reader like myself, I think it is very likely you would enjoy this offering.

Lightning Rider NA Fantasy/Time Travel Tesla Time Travelers Book 1 eBook Jen Greyson Reviews

The story grabbed me from the first page because Evy became a real character immediately. No backstory, no intro. She was just...well, Evy. I haven't read a story like this in awhile where I actually felt the author put her heroine right under my skin. The story about this young woman learning she was part of an ancient type of person to save her world sounds nutty, but it was very engaging. I recommend it and promise you won't be able to set it down.
This is the first story told in first person, present tense that I've ever truly liked, and I've tried a number of them. Evy is an incredible character full of life and fire, vulnerability and sass. Constantine is a fantastic foil for her and the rest of the supporting cast holds up their end. The time travel makes sense, which is a daunting feat.

The romance surprised me at first, then it felt very natural. Masterfully handled and bittersweet, I can't wait for the chance to dive into the second book.

Although I think this book is awesome, I suspect it will appeal to women more than men. If you like sassy female narrators, though, you'll like this book.
Follow the main character as she notices strange things happening one night and then finds herself in a totally different time not knowing what happened. She is able to find her way back to her own time and learns she has become the first female lightening rider in history. Riding the lightening allows her to go into the past and change certain things but not others. She soon finds that she has goals to reach each time she travels back in time. In this book she is given a "teacher" but soon decides to ride without instruction not knowing who to trust.
Evy Rivera is one of those characters that spurs readers to action. She makes me want to shake a place down and take names! Also, she tangles with --wait for it-- Constantine. I adore his name and pretty much everything about him. I also found the premise, finding a book and discovering unknown family history very intriguing. Can't wait to read the next!
Some of the descriptive writing was almost like reading poetry, and the plot is fascinating. That is what kept me reading to the end. The heroine, however, is nothing like me, so I had a hard time dealing with her reactions. She just blithely accepted things that would've caused me excitement, fear, or curiosity. She has TONS of internal struggling, which can get annoying. Things that happen in a matter of hours or a couple of days, the author treats as if it had happened over months. One example, and I will try not to spoil anything, Constantine tries to train Evy to fight and use her powers. They only train twice, but later Evy is thinking about how lean she is in body and mind from her trainings with him. There's no way her body has changed that much after only 2 days and 2 trainings, unless I missed a few weeks somewhere. I ended the book feeling like parts were missing, and that the timeline was too rushed. I'm not sure I want to waste the money on the next book. As good as the story concept is, I'm glad I only paid $0.99 for this one.
I’m not really sure how this book got into my collection. I think it might have been from a time that I saw someone on Facebook post about a free e-book and I just downloaded it because the title seemed interesting. Now that I’m getting around to reading these books, I’m finding them to be a little outside the norm for what I like to read. That’s not to say I’m against reading anything in the “New Adult” or “Urban Fantasy” genres, it’s just that I wouldn’t choose them first if I had a selection in front of me.

Of course, I can see that the popularity of strong and independent female heroines in the YA and NA genres has definitely spawned a number of authors who want to capitalize on this trend, and this book is no different. That being said, most of my qualms with this book lie with the characters. The majority of the characters seemed quite flat and sometimes just reacted irrationally in order to manufacture conflict. Of the one or two characters who were more fleshed out, who were fortunately the two main characters, I felt that the heroine could have had more skills carry over from the present day into her time travels.

Aside from a few moments here and there where I wasn’t quite sure what was going on, the plot was pretty straightforward and solid. Of course, this applies to the main plot, as the subplot featuring the heroine’s father felt underdeveloped (even though I really wanted to know about his adventures). Granted, this is a limitation of the first-person POV, but it would have been nice to intersperse a bit with his time travels to provide a contrast to the clearly more powerful main character. I also would have liked some more explanation on the mechanism of the “lightning riding,” but from what I gathered of the synopsis of the second book in this series, that will be explained in greater detail later on.

A generic Young Adult novel with a pretty engaging plot, I give Lightning Rider 3.0 stars out of 5.
